Considering the alarming rate at which the green cover of Chennai is depleting, The Hindu Friends of Chennai executed a campaign to bring back at least one lakh trees to the city. The campaign called out for volunteers to participate in seed bomb making, which were made with a mixture of fertile soil, compost, water and a native seed, rolled into a tiny ball. These bombs were then left to dry and later thrown in and around the city to help reforestation. The efforts were taken to contribute to the conservation of nature and to re-green Chennai by harnessing the spirit of volunteerism amongst its citizens. The campaign saw over 400 + volunteer registrations online. Spot registrations were also offered. The multimedia approach in promoting the event helped create the impact it had. More than 500 participants from across the city descended upon The Hindu office, Anna Salai to make the seed bombs. The spirit of volunteerism cut across age groups from 5 year olds to 70 year olds. More than 15,000 seed bombs were made in total. The event was a huge success which left both the volunteers and the city green with joy.
