The Hindu friends of Chennai celebrated women’s day by bringing together small time women entrepreneurs from across the city, giving them a platform to showcase their unique products to the world. These budding entrepreneurs were allowed to put up their stalls free of cost at the Chennai Shopping Carnival organized by The Hindu Friends of Chennai. This was an initiative taken to provide the much-needed support and encouragement to promote female entrepreneurship, which represents a vast untapped source of innovation, job creation and economic growth. Several ads were run across print and online mediums inviting women entrepreneurs to show their strong suit. An overwhelming response of almost 300 registrations were received, out of which 50 were selected. The foundation tapped on its social media platforms to engage more crowd to bring in more attendees. The campaign also received support from celebrities such as R J Sindhu. The shopping festival that went on for 2 days received an overwhelming response with over 2000 happy visitors. Besides shopping, the customers were also offered entertainment, with live music performance by the band –Marinade, and flash mob by MSM Dance School. The carnival also hosted several workshops and activities for women and children ranging from fireless cooking workshop for children, to self-defense sessions, Zumba fitness and storytelling workshops. In addition to this, the highlight was the adoption and petting zoo was also set up by the blue cross of India, bringing smiles to many passersby all the while helping several homeless animals to find a new home. Likewise, Organic Garden Foundation, an NGO that promotes organic farming, set up plantation zones where children were given demonstrations of planting saplings in mud pots. The shopping festival turned out to be a grand success paving the path for many talented women to make their mark in the world and make it big!
